Coated papers are manufactured as an offset sheet base stock and have a coating added to the surface to create a smooth printing surface. The coatings provide a barrier so the ink sits on top rather than being absorbed into the paper. Coated papers are classified by finish: Gloss, Dull, Silk, and Matte.
